“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7)

“The Lord God…”
When studying the existence of man, evolution leaves God out. However, the Bible starts with God. I have had the privilege to work with people who have left God out of their lives. To say their lives are empty would be an understatement. How marvelous it is to watch God do miracles in their lives, when they begin to acknowledge Him. Genesis 4:6 reminds us of how quickly it can be that we forget about the Lord God. This verse tells us that Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden. Cain was the first born of the man and woman who walked with God and talked with God in the Garden. It is clear in this verse that Cain became disinterested as he fled from the presence of the Lord. He was not interested in fellowship with God. He was not interested in honoring God. He surely was not interested in obeying God. When a person is disinterested in something, it is only because he is interested in something else more important to him.

Not only was Cain disinterested, but his dwelling proved that he had left God out of his life. The Bible says he dwelt in a place called Nod. The Hebrew word for Nod means “to wander.” How fitting is the definition to wander, when that is exactly what people do when they leave God out of their lives. It is the inevitable result of leaving God’s presence out of your life. Many today are wandering from the right path. They wander from the wisdom of God’s word and God’s people. I can assure you that Nod is a place of restlessness. Nod is a place of emptiness. Nod may have money, but no means to life. Nod may have popularity, but will pale in comparison to the life waiting for you in Christ Jesus.

2012 is a great opportunity to learn to dwell under the shadow of the Almighty by being interested in all that He is and all He is doing. God is working in 2012! I do not know what 2012 holds, but I know Who holds 2012! Use this short “checklist” below to challenge your interest in the Saviour this year:

1. Be faithful to your local church.
2. Be faithful to a morning devotion time of Bible reading and prayer.
3. Write down one or more Bible verses and meditate on them daily.
4. Look at each situation you face daily as an opportunity for Christ to live His life through you.
5. Go to the cross daily in your mind and recognize you were crucified with Christ, buried with Him and yet rose again with Him. The most glorious thing about the cross is…”it is empty”.
6. Remove all self-pity daily by remembering point #5.
7. Let forgiveness freely flow from you towards others.
