Bad Leaders

“The posts went out, being hastened by the king’s commandment, and the decree was given in Shushan the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.” (Esther 3:15)

After further meditating on last week’s post, it occurred to me through the Scriptures how that rulers and leaders can evolve their views. The 1828 definition of ‘evolve’ means to: a) unfold, or open and expand; b) to throw out, to emit. Either definition would require that very little roots are established and even fewer convictions. These actions are not the actions of anyone that I personally would want to elect to run any group of people.

I find three similarities between some of the leadership over our country and the leadership of Xerxes (Ahasuerus) and his trusted staff.

“The posts went out, being hastened by the king’s commandment.” The decree was to kill the Jews (Esther 3:13). It was a bloody decree that selected the thirteenth day of the twelfth month to slay the Jews and to take “spoil”, which meant they would take the wealth of the slain Jews.

It is always a bad decision to stand against the Jewish people. Genesis 12:3 “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” I believe history repeats itself! If you claim the name of Christ as your Saviour, I can assure you that you should stand with the country of Israel.

“And the king and Haman sat down to drink.” The two men who were most responsible for the decree to kill the Jews sat down to drink after the decree was issued. They were not drinking water! They were drinking liquor, as most government officials choose to do these days. But it is bad government to booze. Those who must drink should not be allowed to govern. Drink destroys good judgment.

Proverbs 31:4, “It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: 5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.”

Drink is a curse upon any people; and when it gets into government, it will curse the land. It certainly has cursed our land. No Christian should choose to be controlled by any substance other than the Holy Spirit; especially those that are in leadership of any kind. I have met many people who are in leadership positions “who take a drink of alcohol to wind down,” or tranquilize themselves to go to bed, or they MUST have some kind of drug or substance in the morning to get them going. OK, I will stop there before I lose ½ my readers.

“But the city Shushan was perplexed.” The word translated perplexed means to disturb. Bad government disturbs the people instead of bringing tranquility to the people. A bad leader agitates and upsets instead of bringing peace to the land.

This blog is intended to get the reader to think Biblically before they vote. It also serves as a reminder to those of us in leadership not to have the rule, “do as I say, not as I do”. We have far too much decreeing, drinking, and disturbing from leadership in this day.
