2Peter 1:1-5, “Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: (2) Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, (3) According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: (4) Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (5) And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge…”

I have a dear friend in Rockford that I am one of several men that have had the opportunity to mentor him. Randy Bredeson is a treasure to our Lord. This man has a testimony of one that has grown faster than plants soaking in miracle grow! If you ask him the secret to this growth, he will clearly tell you one word: FAITH. Randy often reminds delegates who come to Rockford of the key ingredient in his life.

As I have been meditating on 2 Peter, I was thrilled to see words such as life, His divine power, and given to us all. However, the introduction must be looked over again when you come to verse 5 and see the key ingredient listed – FAITH. There are three things that I have watched Randy place faith in that has benefited not only him, but dozens of others as he serves with us here in Rockford.

I. This faith is in God’s Son = Jesus Christ

1Peter 5:10, “But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” Peter’s first epistle emphasizes the word grace as seen above. His second epistle emphasizes the word knowledge. Knowledge is used 13 times in this short book.

Faith in Christ is different. Peter called it like precious faith. My standing with God is the same as the apostles of old. The person who was saved from a world of addiction has the same precious faith as a person saved out of addiction. Those who walked with Christ when he was on the earth have no special advantage. This faith is like precious. It is personal as we place our dependence and trust in a risen Saviour – Jesus Christ.

II. This faith involves God’s power

When you know Jesus Christ personally, you receive His power. This power produces life and godliness. Randy not only is enjoying God’s power in him, but he is seeing God demonstrate that power through him. This week I enjoyed hearing of several people saved as Randy goes soul winning regularly. This power produces life and godliness.

III. This faith involves God’s promises

Dan Black and Joe Livingston visited Randy several years ago the day he was released from a 28 day program. The precious promise of eternal life was given to Randy and by faith he received Christ. All of Gods promises are precious. They are beyond calculation. Randy’s life began to emulate the life of Christ because the divine power of God was working in and through Randy. Randy continues to attend Reformers Unanimous as a helper, as well as all other services of North Love Baptist Church. He looks for more of God’s precious promises and by faith, exercises faith in them and Him. The results are encouraging to many.

I could give you dozens of other illustrations of people who I have watched follow this same pathway. Faith is the victory that overcomes the world! Just notice the little word in our text before the word faith…it is the word “add”. It literally means to supply generously. In other words, everything else following faith is something we develop by exercising faith. God is really the One Who does all the work – we simple exercise faith and God supplies the promises and the divine power to give us the desire and the power to glorify HIM.
