Not Just Any Success

Joshua 1:8, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

Requirements for good success:

The first requirement to receive the blessings of good success and prosperity involves our mouth. The “book of the law” not departing out of our mouth is speaking of the first five books of the Bible. Jesus told us he did not come to do away with the law, but to fulfill it. Recently, I heard a quote that so appropriately fits here: “Just because you follow the rules, does not mean you are following Christ!” This is so very true. Many people think they have a relationship with God based on what they are doing. Relationship with the Father is only available through the Son, not through your works…but through His work! After meditating on this quote, I added a second line. “Just because you follow the rules, does not mean you are following Christ, however, if you follow Christ, you will not have a problem with the rules!” Speak the word of God today! It is all profitable to you! It is important to speak God’s Word to others.

The second requirement involves the mind. Meditating is the destination. It’s not simply reading the Bible, studying the Bible, or memorizing the Bible. One must meditate on the Bible in order to experience the blessings of the reward promised in this passage.

The third requirement involves our mannerisms. If we speak the Bible; if we meditate on the Bible, it will have a profound effect on our mannerisms. Bible meditating Christians find victory and success over drugs, alcohol, pornography, gluttony, sexual sins, and so much more. The Word in us will position us properly according to John 15, “If you abide in me and my Words abide in you, you shall ask what you will and it will be done unto you.” The man and woman who walk with God always arrive at the right destination. Let me remind you that the man and woman who walk with God, has arrived at their destination! We were created to fellowship with Him and glory in Him.

Rewards of good success:

“…then thou shall make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

The rewards for devotion to the Word of God were twofold:

First, Joshua believed he would be prosperous. “Make thy way prosperous.” This means Joshua would complete his task of leading Israel into Canaan. Keep the Word front and center in your life and you will complete your God-given tasks, too.

Second, he would be prudent. “Thou shalt have good success.” The word translated success means prudence, skilled, insight. Joshua needed wisdom to lead Israel; and if he kept the Word prominent in his life, he would have that wisdom. The Word gives us great wisdom for our tasks.
